Fatal Crash Rate on Georgia Roads in 2023

WrongfulDeath4

While some traffic trends have reversed in recent years, others have continued to worsen. For instance, in 2023, there were fewer fatal highway traffic accidents in Georgia than in the prior two years. Unfortunately, pedestrian fatalities have not taken a similar dip, but continue to grow worse, a trend that has largely been attributed to the increasing number of cars on the road, an aging roadway infrastructure, and reports of reckless driving and excessive speeding. Read on for some updated traffic data from the past two years in Georgia and a few predictions for 2024.

Georgia Traffic Accident Data from 2022

There were an estimated 384,527 car accidents in Georgia in 2022. Of those accidents, 1,786 resulted in a fatality and 1,844 people lost their lives. A further 150,000 people sustained non-fatal injuries. This represents an increase of 20 percent between 2019 and 2022, a trend that is mostly attributed to increasing rates of risky behavior by drivers, including speeding and driving under the influence.

Accident Trends in 2023

Estimates from the first half of 2023 suggest that there has been a decrease of almost four percent in the number of fatal car accidents in Georgia. For instance, compared to January through June of 2022, Georgia motorists in the first half of 2023 experienced 13.3 percent fewer fatalities. Fortunately, Georgia is not alone in reporting these numbers, with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announcing that ten regions in the U.S. have also experienced decreases in traffic fatalities. Unfortunately, reckless driving habits are still creating a dangerous environment for more vulnerable road users, like cyclists, motorcyclists, and pedestrians. This alarming trend is reflected by nationwide statistics, which reveal that cyclist and pedestrian fatalities continue to account for as many as one out of every five U.S. traffic fatalities.

Liability for Fatal Car Accidents

While no amount of money can compensate a victim’s family for the untimely loss of a loved one, recovering wrongful death damages can help families pay off mounting medical debt and cover other expenses while they grieve. Compensable losses include medical bills, lost income and benefits, funeral costs, pain and suffering, and emotional distress. However, in order to recover these amounts, the surviving relatives of the victim must be able to prove that someone else’s negligence was the cause of their loved one’s death. An experienced legal team can make all the difference in the success or failure of such a claim.
